Looking Ahead to This Year's Transportation Improvements in Tualatin

In 2018, Tualatin voters approved a $20 million program for citywide transportation projects to help relieve traffic congestion, improve neighborhood traffic safety, and provide safe access to schools and parks. The Tualatin Moving Forward bond program has already completed 14 projects, and 7 more will be underway this construction season.

Work will be completed this year on one of the program's signature projects known as Garden Corner Curves. Construction started last August to upgrade SW 105th Avenue/Blake Street and 108th Avenue between Avery Street and Willow Street. Until now, people who walk and cycle have shared this narrow, constrained roadway with vehicles. The road has sharp curves and limited visibility, offering little or no shoulder. Steep banks and ditches loom just beyond the pavement edge.

  • Improvements at Garden Corner Curves include:
  • Widening the roadway and adding a new off-road shared use path;
  • Pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at Moratoc Drive and Blake/108th;
  • A high visibility raised crosswalk; and
  • A driver feedback sign that displays vehicle speed.

It was necessary for work to be completed over two years, to protect fish habitat in Hedges Creek which flows underneath the roadway.

The long list of projects beginning construction in 2021 includes these locations:

This year, with so many projects under construction, Tualatin is focusing on work zone safety. This boils down to two words—Slow Down! Drivers can easily spot these work areas—with caution signs, flashing lights, detour signs and barricades. Whenever workers are in the roadway, flaggers will also be present. Please follow their instructions. Any delays will be brief and you can help safeguard worker safety—and your own.
