Construction Begins on Martinazzi Avenue/Sagert Street Intersection

Martinazzi and Sagert

Construction is set to begin on improvements to the busy intersection of Martinazzi Avenue and Sagert Street. The project primarily addresses traffic congestion, but also includes elements to improve bicycle and pedestrian access and safety.

Public engagement, planning, and design work began in 2019. The City selected Brown Contracting, Inc. as the general contractor. The estimated project cost is $1.75 million. People will notice construction activity beginning in mid-June, with roadway reconstruction underway during summer and fall. The final step to install the new poles and signal arms will take place in the winter.

The intersection is often congested, with traffic backed up in all directions. Due to the heavy traffic, the intersection is also difficult to navigate for people who cycle or walk.

Designed to optimize the follow of vehicle traffic, the Martinazzi/Sagert project will install a new traffic signal to replace stop signs. Signal timing will be coordinated with other signals along the corridor.

Additional improvements include high-visibility crosswalks, curb ramps, and new sidewalks that connect to all four corners of the intersection. Bicycle lanes will be reconfigured, and access improved to the existing public transit stops. To the north, at the intersection of Martinazzi and Mohawk Streets, the crosswalk will be improved to address safety issues identified by the community members who walk to the bus stops in the area.

The intersection is in the Martinazzi Woods CIO neighborhood, but many Tualatin residents travel through it every day. The Martinazzi/Sagert project is one of the signature projects for Tualatin Moving Forward, the transportation bond program approved by voters in May 2018.

“We are excited to deliver on the promise we made to voters to transform this intersection”, said Tualatin Public Works Director Jeff Fuchs, P.E.
