Committed to Saving the Pollinators

In October 2019, the City Council passed the resolution designating the City of Tualatin as a Bee City USA® Affiliate, joining almost 100 communities nationally in supporting the cause to sustain pollinators.

Pollinators play a big role in maintaining, creating, and supporting animal life on Earth. They are responsible for the reproduction of almost 90% of the flowering plant species including the world’s crops, generating one out of every three bites of food we eat. This essential service of pollination is at risk in many areas from habitat loss, pesticide use, and introduced diseases.

With the Bee City USA® Affiliation the City of Tualatin has made the commitment to provide pollinators with healthy habitats and to increase the understanding among staff as well as community members about the vital role that they play and what each of us can do to sustain them.

Bee City USA® Community Celebration/Observation

As a commitment to raising awareness, The City of Tualatin hosts special pollinator habitat planting and educational events to celebrate the pollinators. This past year the City hosted five Put Down Roots in Tualatin, under this program volunteer’s plant native species to attract pollinators. At these events City staff and 240 volunteers planted 3,300 plants, enhancing 6 acres of habitat and adding 14,400 square feet near Ibach Park. A big thank you to the Tualatin High school students and the community of Tualatin for your help!

In honor of pollinator week there is something special planned throughout June 2021! Bee on the lookout for funky little treasures hidden throughout our parks and greenspaces. These hand-blown glass orbs are made in a variety of colors and have a textured surface to catch and hold water to keep pollinators hydrated. If you are lucky to find one, take photo and tag us #BeeKindTualatin. Keep the fun buzzing along by re-hiding or placing it in your own outdoor garden for our pollinating friends to enjoy as much as you do! Visit Explore Tualatin Now for more information.
