Mayor's Note (June 2021)
Around this time last year, I received a letter from - at the time - ten-year-old Eme. Eme was writing to ask the City Council to reduce litter and air pollution in the city. In fact, I wrote about it in the newsletter and encouraged other youth in the community to reach out. Since then, I've corresponded with Eme three or four times and had the opportunity to hear more about her experiences in Tualatin and hopes for the future.
Last month, we held the annual State of the City address. If you didn't have the chance to view the live event, I strongly encourage you to visit our YouTube Channel and check it out. After the short video, I took questions from the audience. One of the questions was: "What's your favorite part about being mayor?" My answer, of course, was getting to meet and talk with Tualatin's youth.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, I used to have lunch with students from Tigard-Tualatin School District at the Library. We'd spend time talking about various things and - most importantly - how government works. I would explain what a mayor does and how cities can impact the lives of community members in many different ways. You never know - a future mayor of Tualatin could be sitting in the room!
I greatly value these interactions and am looking forward to many more.
