February Mayor’s Note

In December, the City Council and I had the distinct honor of celebrating ten exceptional Eagle Scout candidates who, alongside their proud families and friends, demonstrated what it means to truly invest in community.

These remarkable young people didn't just complete projects—they improved important parts of Tualatin's cherished parks and trails.  At Atfalati Park, worn benches and crumbling masonry were lovingly restored.  Two hundred feet of weathered split-rail fencing now stands strong again at Jurgens Park.  The 86 stairs along the Venetia Trail received a complete makeover, cleaned and outfitted with new safety treads to protect hikers for years to come.  Brown's Ferry Park's fence panels and posts were rebuilt, while at Lake of the Commons, every teak bench was meticulously sanded, cleaned, and resealed to withstand countless future gatherings.  Perhaps most intriguingly, along the Tualatin River Greenway, a damaged mastodon tusk was carefully replaced—with a spare now waiting in reserve, ready for whatever the future brings.

The Council recognized not only these tangible improvements but also the dedication behind them—the hours of planning, the physical labor, and the genuine care these Scouts showed for spaces that belong to all of us.  Our partnership with Scouting runs deep, and these young leaders remind us why that relationship matters.

To Nicholas Brophy, Nico Cone, Windsor Layne, Xander Layne, Jackson Park, Spencer Tsai, Sid Vellanki, Ryan Weinstein, Kol Helland, and Greyson Richard: thank you for making Tualatin better.
