On Monday, June 28, the Tualatin City Council passed Resolution 5562-21 to declare a state of emergency and prohibit the use of fireworks within city limits. As described in the Resolution, this decision was made due to the extreme heat and dry conditions, as well as the significant likelihood of fire damage from the use of fireworks. The prohibition took effect immediately and will extend through Friday, July 9th.

Police Chief Bill Steele said, "I hope our community members will find other ways to celebrate this year." According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause over 19,000 fires and require emergency room treatment for over 9,000 people in the United States each year. The Tualatin Police Department works closely with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TVF&R) each year to respond to calls in the community.

As in other years, Tualatin Police Officers will lead with education when responding to reports of firework activity. If needed, officers have the authority to confiscate fireworks and issue citations for non-compliance. Community members are asked to report any firework activity immediately via the non-emergency dispatch line: (503) 629-0111.
