Project Description
Potential railroad crossing improvements at the Tualatin-Sherwood Rd and Boones Ferry Rd intersection. The purpose of the project is to identify a safe, comfortable, and accessible intersection and rail crossing alternative that improves mobility, safety, and connectivity while supporting multiple modes of transportation and rail freight needs at the intersection. Proposed alternative would balance cultural, environmental, economic development, and community considerations. This site is located at the intersection of SW Tualatin-Sherwood Road and SW Boones Ferry Road.

About the Project
Tualatin-Sherwood Road/Boones Ferry Road is a key multimodal intersection in the city and southeast Washington County. Its significance has been shaped by:
the surrounding natural environment including Nyberg Creek, Tualatin River and Hedges Creek wetland,
past transportation infrastructure investments (including the original Tualatin-Sherwood farm-to-market road, Portland & Western rail line, I-5 and the Boones Ferry Road and Nyberg Road interchanges, and TriMet WES commuter rail),
regional political decisions regarding major transportation routes, and
ongoing population and job growth within the region and along the OR 99W corridor to the south and west.
As a result, the intersection must accommodate the growing local and regional commuter and freight needs, despite existing safety and peak-hour mobility and connectivity challenges. This project seeks to identify potential rail crossing alternatives to address existing and future multimodal operation and safety issues and develop an implementation plan for the preferred alternative(s).
Purpose
The purpose of the Project is to identify a safe, comfortable, and accessible intersection and rail crossing alternative at Tualatin-Sherwood Road that supports multimodal transportation and rail freight needs in the study area and improves mobility, safety, and connectivity in balance with cultural, environmental, economic development and community considerations.
