Tualatin Police Department - Citizen's Academy
The Tualatin Police Department held its first citizen’s academy, fittingly called The Tualatin Police Experience, in May, 2011. The event was a huge success! A total of ten citizens attended, consisting of business people and residents of Tualatin. Since that time, a second citizen's academy took place in June, 2012 and we look forward to the third in the Spring of 2013!
The event gives valuable members of our city the opportunity to take an in-depth tour of our facility, learn the functions of the various members of the police department, take part in defensive tactics exercises and confrontational scenarios, learn emergency vehicle driving, and safely shoot police firearms. It was our way of sharing a small percentage of what it’s like to be an officer and what our department does every day to stay safe and protect others. This enables the participants to walk away with a far better understanding of what police do and why.
In all, the “Experience” proves to be an amazingly educational event. All of the participants provided excellent feedback. Many of them said that the experience will forever change the way they look at police related situations in the future and that they are better people after going through the training. They all encouraged us to continue the “Experience” as an eye opening way to reach out to supporters and critics alike.
It is our sincere hope to eventually reach out to all of the individuals of Tualatin, whether it is residents or business members. We are proud of our department and wish to share that pride and offer a better understanding of who we are to each and every one of you. Tualatin Police Department thanks you for your unwavering support.
