Frequently Asked Questions

What number do I call for Police?

How can I get a copy of a police report?
The Police Services Unit provides copies of reports as required in accordance with the Oregon Public Records Law. Copies of reports may be requested by submitting a Police Records Request Form.

How do I report an accident to Police?
In the case of an emergency, always call 9-1-1. For a non-emergency, such as damages found to your vehicle with no suspect information, report it to police non-emergency at 503-629-0111. Typically, the officer will need to observe the vehicle damage. You may be asked to bring the vehicle to the Tualatin Police Department if the accident occurred in the City of Tualatin.

What if I hit a vehicle or property and no one is around?
If you hit an unattended vehicle, try to find the owner. If you cannot find the owner, by law, you are required to leave a note identifying you as the person who hit the vehicle with your contact information (address and phone number) and a brief description of what happened.

If you damage property other than a motor vehicle, you also must try to find the owner, or someone in charge, to report the damage. Call police non-emergency at 503-629-0111 and an officer can help determine the owner of the vehicle or property.

When do I have to report an accident to the DMV?
You must file an Oregon Accident and Insurance Report with DMV within 72 hours when:

  • Damage to any vehicle is over $2,500 (even if your vehicle was the only one in the crash);
  • Any vehicle is towed from the scene;
  • Injury or death resulted from this accident; or
  • Damages to anyone's property other than a vehicle involved in the accident is more than $2,500.

You must complete an Oregon Accident and Insurance Report and return it to the DMV, even if a police officer writes a report. A police report does not replace the requirement to file an accident report with DMV. Failure to properly file an Oregon Traffic Accident and Insurance Report with the DMV within 72 hours of the accident could result in the suspension of your driver's license. Be sure to retain a copy of all reports for your records.

How do I get an impounded vehicle released?
